Evoking shivers of horror and pangs of anxiety, Spoorloos is a great Dutch classic reminiscent of a cross between The Silence of the Lambs and Funny Games.
It begins innocently enough—with a vacation trip. A Dutch couple, Saskia (Johanna ter Steege) and Rex (Gene Bervoets), drive to France. On the way, they argue and tease each other, learning French words. At one point, they stop at a gas station. Saskia goes to the toilet – and then disappears. Her disappearance will haunt Rex for the rest of his life.
We quickly meet the kidnapper – Raymond (a shocking performance by Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu), an inconspicuous chemistry teacher. Will Rex ever meet the tormentor he is gradually becoming obsessed with?
