The film realistically, even shockingly, depicts the agony of first love and the forces that tear lovers apart. The atmosphere is thick, saturated with gossip and a lack of understanding for the emotion. Warren Beatty as Bud and Natalie Wood as his beloved made a perfect on-screen couple.
When Splendor in the Grass hit theaters, it received rave reviews. Wood was nominated for an Oscar, and William Inge won an Oscar for Best Screenplay.
