Silent Friend

preview screening

Is it possible to befriend a tree and, in doing so, change your life?

In Ildikó Enyedi’s Venice Film Festival award-winning film (On Body and Soul), this question marks the beginning of a mesmerizing, emotionally charged journey.

The Silent Friend invites us into a world where people can form deep connections with nature and communicate with it beyond words. It is a meditative film that envelops you in calm and fills you with strength.

In the heart of the university botanical garden grows a magnificent Japanese ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba), which over the centuries becomes a silent witness and participant in the story of three strangers.

A determined young woman fights for a spot in the botany department, seeking refuge in the shade of the tree from the prejudices of the male-dominated world of science. A lonely student, who has never paid attention to plants, finds a foothold in its silent presence after a life-altering upheaval. A neurologist from Hong Kong (played by Tony Leung, known from Wong Kar-wai’s films) begins to question his scientific beliefs under the influence of his contact with the tree, discovering a deep connection between the visible and the intangible.

The Silent Friend is a film that soothes, inspires, and opens our eyes to what escapes our notice in everyday life. It allows us to immerse ourselves in a story full of peace, beauty, and emotional depth, reminding us of the powerful impact that contact with nature has on us.

It is a moving story about bonds that transcend the limits of human understanding—and about how sometimes we can find our most loyal friend where we least expect it.
