Sisters Nora (Renate Reinsve) and Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) meet their long-lost father, the charismatic, once-great film director Gustav (Stellan Skarsgård). He offers Nora, a theater actress, a role in his latest film, which is to be his return to the world of cinema. When she rejects the offer, he hires a young Hollywood star (Elle Fanning).
Now the sisters must deal not only with their complicated situation with their father, but also with the American star who is changing their family dynamics.
