Rose

“Rose” is Markus Schleinzer’s latest film, starring Sandra Hüller, who won the Silver Bear for her portrayal of the title character.

It is the story of a woman posing as a man in 17th-century Protestant Germany. A soldier (Sandra Hüller) arrives in a remote village, claiming to be the heir to an abandoned farm. The stranger initially arouses suspicion, but thanks to the documents she possesses, her impeccable work ethic, and her acceptance of the strict local customs, she wins over the community. The drama, heightened by the starkness of the black-and-white cinematography, unfolds as a quiet conflict between the exclusion brought about by otherness and the need to preserve one’s own identity.
