In this conversation on the visual representation of abortion—its experience, act, and decision—Carmen Winant, author of the project The Last Safe Abortion, and Franzis Kabisch, creator of the film Getty Abortions, will participate. Using distinct visual strategies, both artists attempt to capture what often remains unseen or unspoken. The panel will be hosted by Karolina Gembara, the curator of Her Heart, one of four sections of The City of Women exhibition.
What shapes our social and communal imaginaries of abortion? What images circulate in the public sphere today, and are alternative representations possible? What imagery do the artists encounter in their own practice? Why show abortion at all, and what significance might its visibility hold for all of us? These are the questions the invited guests will address.
