In her essay Painting Myself published in March in 2025 in the New York Review of Books, the painter Celia Paul writes about the female gaze, building one’s identity through artistic creation, as well as how women are seen and represented in art and culture. In the center of her story is her own biography are key personal relationships - with other artists, life partners, her mother, sisters and son. She analyses her experience of being a model and a muse for men artists and highlights how painting helps her to regain agency, independence and control over her own image.
During the artist talk, which will mark the opening night of the exhibition The Woman Question 1550-2025, Celia Paul will read the essay Painting Myself. This will be followed by a conversation with the show’s curator Alison Gingers - together they will talk about Paul’s work, her experience of being a woman artist in the contemporary art world, as well as other key themes present in the exhibition.
