Orlando

An English aristocrat, poet, and favorite of Queen Elizabeth I receives an extraordinary command from the monarch: never to grow old. Thus begins Orlando’s (Tilda Swinton) four-century journey through court intrigues, diplomatic missions, literary salons, and wars – a journey during which the protagonist wakes up one morning as a woman, without asking why, 
and continues to live, loved and betrayed, fighting for the right to her own property in a world that denies it to women.

Sally Potter, a director with roots in British experimental cinema, has directed an adaptation long considered unfilmable – preserving the ironic distance of Woolf’s prose through the protagonist’s characteristic, direct gazes into the camera.

Alexei Rodionov’s painterly cinematography, the opulence of Sandy Powell’s costumes (her first Oscar nomination), and the music co-composed by Potter herself build a world in which form is just as important as content: costumes, architecture, and lighting become the language of the story, not merely its backdrop.

The cast, alongside Swinton, included Billy Zane, Quentin Crisp (as Elizabeth I), and Charlotte Valandrey, among others.

The film won two BAFTA Awards, received two Oscar nominations, and took home the Audience Award at the Venice Film Festival, securing its place in the canon of queer cinema and the history of British female filmmaking.
