We invite anyone whose research interests include socialist internationalism or issues related to the relationship between the Cold War and the decolonization of the African continent to participate in the seminar. The seminar will focus on the impact of these issues on the social and cultural spheres and on the work of Polish artists after 1945.
The seminar will take as its starting points the exhibition Ways of the Black Spread Over the White Land and the book Critical Approaches to Art, Race and Coloniality in Eastern Europe, edited by Dorota Jagoda Michalska and Marta Zboralska. The aim of the meeting will be to examine how the ideological and political evolution of the People’s Republic of Poland influenced the presence of themes condemning racism and colonialism, or those related to Blackness and Sub-Saharan Africa, in culture between 1945 and 1989, but also to attempt to answer the question of how to study these complex and ambivalent phenomena. The seminar will provide an opportunity to meet and exchange diverse perspectives on a topic that has been addressed in various ways in numerous scholarly and nonfiction publications over the past decade.
