Between the 12th and 19th centuries, when women in Japan were forbidden to perform on stage, a form of dance evolved behind the closed doors of ozashiki rooms, finding freedom within constraint. Living under the oppressive conditions of forced sexual labour, jiutamai dancers discovered emancipatory spaces in imaginary worlds created within just a few square metres. Endless
Box tests the principles of this Japanese dance tradition by compressing space to barely 1.7 cubic metres. It is a search for openness within confinement, for freedom within limitation. Inside the box, secrets are danced in a whisper.
