Czechoslovakia and Czechia have a particularly rich history of surrealist photography in the years since the formation of the Czechoslovak Surrealist Group in 1934. This history includes long periods of repressive political rule, during which photographers had to seek new strategies to express critique or resistance, and to witness the concrete irrationality of their times.

This presentation will discuss key examples of works from the 1940s to the 1980s and beyond, spanning photomontage, darkroom experiments and especially documentary photography to reflect upon the tensions between politics, freedom and day-to-day material reality.
