Join us for a guided tour as part of the series Elevator or the Stairs? of the exhibition The Woman Question 1550–2025.

We will examine how female artists from the 16th to the 21st century depicted both paid and unpaid labor—housework, emotional labor, and caregiving. We’ll talk about both Sofonisba Anguissola, who took portrait commissions in 16th-century Italy, and Maria Pinińska-Bereś, who worked in a small apartment in Kraków in a room she shared with her daughter.

Artistic creation was a means of livelihood for many of the women whose works we will examine. But paintings and sculptures were—and are—not only a source of income but also a tool for critical reflection.

In the exhibition, all of these elements come together to tell a story about the undervaluation of women’s work, the boundaries between the private and public spheres, and how art can be a tool for reclaiming women’s place in society.
