Exhibition Edward Dwurnik. Pride and Shame focuses on the artist’s work from the 1970s and 1980s—a presentation of his two main series of paintings, titled Athletes and Workers. The starting point for the exhibition was the desire to reconstruct Dwurnik’s original artistic stance, which took shape at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s.
This approach was characterized by a rejection of the elitism of art, connections to outsider art, and the concept of painting as a document of social life. Dwurnik believed in realistic painting that participates in life and treated it as an egalitarian language that helps communicate with the people portrayed in the paintings. He believed in painting that helps express and build community. In addition to serving as a retrospective of Dwurnik’s paintings, the exhibition at the Museum will also serve as a starting point for exploring a theme central to Polish identity over the past half-century: the experience of social advancement and profound class transformations.
Curator Łukasz Ronduda will lead a guided tour of the exhibition.
