The opening night of Nadia Markiewicz's exhibition Misterioso will be an opportunity to meet the artist and curator and view the exhibition together. An additional attraction will be a card illusion show performed by Joanna Pałeczka.
Misterioso is a summary of Nadia Markiewicz's creative work over the last two years, particularly in the field of performance. The artist is particularly interested in the points of contact between disability and entertainment, often referring to the form and aesthetics of circus and illusionist shows. For her, they are a metaphor for her own experience – a person with a missing left forearm who wore a prosthesis for many years, thus creating the illusion of her ability for other people.
At the exhibition, the artist presents a series of props and costumes accompanying her performances, which are almost stage-like. In them, she plays, for example, the role of a dove from an illusionist show, whose wings are clipped so that it does not fly away when taken out of a hat. She also becomes a rose – finding an analogy for her own incredible body in the mutations that occur in nature. Or a deck of cards, whose choreography – covering and uncovering – refers to her own experience of hiding her disability.
In reference to Markiewicz's artistic practice and aesthetics, the opening night of the exhibition will be graced by a performance by illusionist Joanna Pałeczka, who will present a program of card illusions in the auditorium space.
Nadia Markiewicz is a visual artist, performer, and author of spatial and video installations. She lives in Warsaw. Her works address the topic of unusual bodies and their invisibility in society. She explores the issue of disability from an autobiographical perspective and seeks metaphors in the surreal potential of entertainment and mass culture. She is a PhD student at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow and a resident of the International Studio & Curatorial Program in New York (2023). She is the winner of the Europe Beyond Access award granted by Zachęta – National Gallery of Art and the British Council (2021) and the Grand Prix at the 10th Rybie Oko Young Art Biennale (2022). She is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Her works have been presented at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, Zachęta – National Gallery of Art, Kunsthalle Bratislava, and Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, among others.
Joanna Pałeczka is an illusionist. She specializes in card illusions. She is the winner of numerous awards, including 2nd prize at the French Illusion Championships (category: card illusion) in Troyes in 2025, 2nd prize at the Italian Illusion Championships (category: close-up illusion, so-called "close-up") in Abano Terme in 2025, 2nd prize at the German Junior Illusion Championships (category: card illusion) in Gera in 2025, and a special prize at the Joker Magic Day competition in Budapest in 2025. She is a four-time scholarship holder of the Santander Bank Polska Foundation.
