“Placeholders” presents a series of paintings by Tymek Borowski, created between 2023 and
2025. The bilingual book includes documentation of the exhibition at BWA in Zielona Góra, a curatorial text by Janek Owczarek, and an expanded selection of works from the series—reproductions of over 50 paintings and detailed photographs of fragments, documenting the nuances and diversity of painterly approaches.
“The artist addresses the theme of overstimulation and the excess of expansive, meaningless
content defining today’s consciousness. His paintings are constructed from incomprehensible
inscriptions, entered on a computer keyboard in series of free-form ‘painterly’
hand gestures. Borowski juxtaposes them with expressive abstraction and aggressive color schemes, drawing on the aesthetics of internet memes, “world-explaining” Instagram graphics, or TikTok brainrot. For him, however, internet slop is not a manifestation of the decadent decline of culture, but rather a cyclically recurring phenomenon with creative potential. That is why, in seeking a taxonomy for these images, they should be placed somewhere between spam and a stoic quote, an internet shitpost.”
