The Publishing house Wydałem and MSN invite you to the launch of Patryk Mogilnicki’s book *Conan sp. z o.o.: Polish Illustrators and Cover Designers of Fantasy Books in Poland During the Transition Period (1985–1995)*.

The discussion with the author will be moderated by Szymon Holcman.

Patryk Mogilnicki’s new publication is a meticulously documented visual and textual narrative about imagination and its visual creators in an era of upheaval. Patryk Mogilnicki speaks with thirteen creators of the covers of best-selling
fantasy books that appeared on the market during the transition period thanks to private publishers (including Amber, CIA-Books, and Phantom Press). The overview of
iconic publishing series from the Polish People’s Republic (Fantastyka-Przygoda, SF, Z Kosmonautą, Fantazja-Przygoda-Rozrywka, Biblioteka „Fantastyki”) preceding this section has also been enriched with five interviews with the designers of their covers. The book also includes detailed commentaries on selected themes: from a discussion of typography on the covers to a description of the fashion phenomenon surrounding the image of Conan. The text is accompanied by several hundred covers and illustrations, including some that were never used. This extensive selection allows readers to trace the evolution of styles, as well as the variety of technologies employed, the scope of imagination, and the craftsmanship of the creators behind specific projects.

Realistically bloody, filled with monsters, warriors, and spaceships, these covers played a role in the success of the bestselling novels that filled tens of thousands of Polish bookshelves at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s. Perhaps they still stand there? They have survived to this day as individual objects, uncataloged and undescribed, scattered, without a story of their own. Patryk Mogilnicki, a collector of these editions, has undertaken a massive amount of antiquarian and research work to offer readers, science fiction enthusiasts, and admirers of the aesthetics of the transition era a pioneering history of this bygone phenomenon.
