Alexander Hahn – Selected Video Works and an Interview with the Artist
Join us for a screening of films by Alexander Hahn, a Swiss artist who has been working with electronic media since the late 1970s.
The screening will be followed by a conversation with the artist, moderated by Weronika Zalewska – a visual artist, researcher, and poet. She works with video, text, sound, and collective actions.
The event will be held in English.
What does the camera see when it loses complete control over what it records? What happens to the image when chance, delay, interference, and memory enter the frame?
Since the late 1970s, the work of Alexander Hahn—a Swiss artist and pioneer of experimental electronic media whose works have been exhibited in Europe and the United States, including at New York’s MoMA, Kunsthaus Zürich, the Centre Pompidou, and ZKM Karlsruhe—has revolved around these questions. The artist has also been the recipient of prestigious grants, including the DAAD in Berlin, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the Swiss foundation Pro Helvetia. After many years of living and working in New York, Hahn now resides in Poland.

KINOMUZEUM presents a 90-minute program of selected single-channel works by Hahn—a journey through nearly four decades of artistic practice. For the Warsaw audience, this is also an opportunity to encounter his work for the first time since the exhibition at the Foksal Gallery thirty years ago.
This is not a film retrospective in the conventional sense, but an encounter with a body of work in which the image constantly eludes stability—suspended between documentary and projection, observation and transformation, everyday reality and something half-dreamed.

The program includes early works such as Aerial Stills and Aviation Memories, focusing on perception, memory, and distance, as well as Dirt Site—one of Hahn’s key immersive works—and Occult Chemistry, in which found images are transformed into a hypnotic field of visual transformation.
In the second part of the evening, we will see Transmission, a selection from the Video Vignettes series, and an excerpt from INDOCAM—an experimental travelogue from New York to India, filmed with a hidden camera placed in a wristwatch.
In Hahn’s work, reality is never simply recorded. It is subjected to chance, technology, and time—and it is precisely there, in this loss of control, that its strangeness begins to reveal itself.
