Afrofuturism. Towards new worlds: Octavia E. Butler and afrofuturists

In her diaries, Octavia Butler wrote: there is nothing new under the sun, but there are new suns. This statement by arguably the most important afrofuturist author reminds us that when old systems fail, a change of perspective becomes the key to survival. In the third decade of the 21st century, we desperately need new worlds, visions of tomorrow that will pull us out of our sense of global powerlessness. African American and African creativity that rewrites history and identity, imagining a better future, brings a lot of inspiration for the here and now, combining advanced technoculture with the spiritual heritage of our ancestors and decolonizing our imagination. Afrofuturism is not only a narrative convention, but above all an aesthetic and a philosophy that goes far beyond the framework of classic science fiction—it is a radical project of the imagination that allows us to dream of a more just reality on the ashes of the old order.
