A Book at the Museum. No Forest. A Meeting with Martyna Miller

Together with Pamoja Press, we invite you to a discussion of the book *Brak Lasu* by Martyna Miller.

The author will speak with Dr. Agata Konczal, a forest anthropologist and author of the book’s opening essay, and Dr. Katarzyna Bojarska, whose concept of the “feminist heap” is referenced in the book.
Agata Konczal will bring a situated perspective to the conversation—as a researcher, she is thoroughly familiar with the context of the local forests in the Tuchola Forest and the current challenges related to forest land management. Katarzyna Bojarska, in turn, will broaden the discussion by incorporating the perspective of visual anthropology and a broader theoretical context.

 

Following the discussion, we invite the audience to a performance segment. Martyna Miller will read selected excerpts from the book and then, together with her father, Mirosław Miller—a self-taught guitarist and lover of sung poetry—will perform two pieces for voice and guitar.

 

“Brak lasu” is the result of Martyna Miller’s long-term project carried out in the Tuchola Forest, an area affected by a storm in August 2017. It is a combination of an art book, a reflective essay, and an open archive consisting of landscape photographs and testimonies from residents. Through a personal narrative, the author weaves these elements into a story of ecological mourning, the community’s resilience, and the processes of biosphere regeneration. Miller also invites reflection on ways to commemorate what has been lost. At the center of these reflections, she places the Mound she created from the debris left behind by the disaster.
