Kijewski/Kocur was an artistic duo formed by Marek Kijewski (b. 1955 in Gdańsk, d. 2007 in Warsaw) and Małgorzata Malinowska (a.k.a. Kocur) (b. 1959 in Sopot), active from 1996 until Marek Kijewski’s death in 2007. Their joint work, combining sculpture, installation, and collage, focused on the study of early capitalism in Polish visual culture and reflected the changes taking place in Poland after the collapse of Communism. Kijewski/Kocur employed a strategy called SSS – surfing, scanning, sampling – and they created works combining elements of pop art with classic sculptural forms, using unobvious materials such as Lego blocks, Haribo jelly beans, artificial fur, precious stones, or 24-karat gold.
