Unveiling of the sculpture “Die Doppelgängerin" by VALIE EXPORT at Central Square

We invite you to the unveiling of VALIE EXPORT’s sculpture Die Doppelgängerin at Central Square in front of the MSN.

 

Die Doppelgängerin is a monumental sculpture in bronze, depicting twin pairs of oversized scissors. Unsettling and ambiguous, the object remains open to interpretation. The title draws on the German word for “look-alike” (der Doppelgänger) and the related notion of one’s spiritual companion, the “other self” or “shadow,” as held in popular belief.

VALIE EXPORT (1940–2026) – Austrian artist. Pioneer of video art, installation art, as well as performance art, which were emerging as genres in the 1960s in connection with the then-nascent counterculture, anti-elitism, and the overall opening of the artistic domain to different social groups, other than just the post-war bourgeois elite. Most concerned with the role and position of women in society, it was VALIE EXPORT’s artistic pursuits that largely defined Europe’s feminist art.
