Hermaphrodite, 1986. (1-23/23)

In the mid-1980s Libera's examined the notion of human sexuality. The area of his interest encompassed all that was on society's margin, non-normativity, gender fluidity (both biological and culture one), androgyny and their reception by wider society.

The political system of the time rigidly dictated the frames and boundaries of social life – there were no space there on deviations from once and for all decided norms, or any signs of individuality, even in such personal sphere as sexuality.

Any otherness questioning traditional morality (which despite officially negating it, still stood at the foundations of the whole social system) was regarded as the enemy against the system and culturally alien. What stood outside of the social norm was a part of another words – capitalist, amoral.

The work „Hermafrodite“ was initially made as a film and was a registration of child's spontaneous dance to Nina Hagen's music. Nonetheless, the artist, fearing another search and arrest by the Secret Securities (he was already imprisoned in 1982-1983) destroyed the film and left only a few frames – photographs. „Hermafrodite“ could possibly become a basis of a sex harrassment or paedophilia accusation.
