Sleeping Grandmother, 1984. (1-1/1)

Sleeping grandmother is in a state of suspension between two realities, and sleep is an obvious and yet subtle annoucement of the closely approaching and unavoidable death. Despite the work just as the cycle as a whole cycles around death and illness.  Sleeping grandmother emanates harmony and quiet balance and can have even soothing effect on the spectator.

On one hand the work discusses sujects that cause internal disquiet, which in our culture are a taboo, but artistic means used here by Libera – dim light, balanced composition allow us in a sense to revise our thinking around those subjects, to domesticate what so far has been simply overlooked. This kind of discrepancy between the content and form is a frequent strategy in Libera's mature work, but as can be seen here, the artist has been applying it already in his early work.
