Nut, 1984 (1-5/5)

„Nut“ is a work from 1984, made shorty after the Zbigniew Libera's release from prison. The cycle consists of a series of photographs documenting writing on pillars and bus stops in Pabianice by an unknown “nut”.

In times of control of everything, including public space, there was no space for spontaneity even when hanging announcements. The shown writings were nonetheless regarded as actions of an insane person and weren't treated seriously – in the eyes of the authorities they weren't considered dangerous, so they also weren't removed. The cycle includes also several of Libera's portraits. Perhaps the author wanted to show in this way, how those writings are an intentional artistic operation which aims to disrupt the social balance and test the mechanism by which state forces designed to sustain order in public space act.
