An Open House – Maria Anto’s Atelier
A meeting with Zuzanna Janin

Breakfast with Zuzanna Janin – an artist – during which participants learned about the life and legacy of the painter Maria Anto.

In 1970s a renowned surrealist painter acquainted with Max Ernst, active in the field of improving the living standards of Polish artists; during the Martial Law she offered an independent space for exhibitions and counterculture meetings.

The house itself, designed by Kazimierz Tołłoczko and built after the war as an infill to the modernist professors’ quarter in Żoliborz district, distinguishes itself not only through external form (has a pitched roof as the only house in the frontage), but mainly through the lives of people involved: before the war the artist’s grandparents were visited by Witkacy; during Communist times the house was inhabited by Maria Anto and her daughter Zuzanna Janin; here Jarosław Modzelewski - the future member of the Gruppa movement – debuted as a painter.
