1,2,3... Cinematography Exercises
Meeting with Paweł Kwiek

  • 1,2,3... Cinematography Exercises

The meeting will be devoted to the book entitled “Paweł Kwiek. 1,2,3... ćwiczenia operatorskie. Fotografia, film, video” (“Paweł Kwiek. 1, 2, 3... Cinematography Exercises. Photography, Film, Video”), which constitutes an attempt to revise and reinterpret the output of Paweł Kwiek. Publication focused on works created in the 1970s.

At the beginning of the 1970s, Paweł Kwiek (born 1951 in Warsaw) was a member of the Film Form Workshop (as one of its main animators) and collaborated with Oskar Hansen’s students, mainly on activities focused around his brother Przemysław. This interplay between two artistic centres of the Polish avant-garde of the 1970s imbued the artist’s works with a very original and pioneer character.

On the one hand, Paweł Kwiek represented an analytical attitude then, although he simultaneously valued improvisation in interactions with people and social and political activity, in a spirit of the Open Form.

The book, published by Fundacja Arton, was created owing to the support of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and Kontakt. Erste Group. The works by Paweł Kwiek, reproduced in the publication, are accompanied by texts written by David Crowley, Marika Kuźmicz, Marek Nash and Łukasz Ronduda.
