Performans

Description by Filmoteka Muzeum

The performance Linga and Yoni. Lyyying Coitus (Linga i joni. Coitus modzistyczny) took place during the Kontperformance festival at the Kont Gallery in Lublin (1997). The action addresses the question of gender, which had already been raised by Wspólnota Leeeżeć (The Lyyying Community) in such pieces as Mechanised-Creature Woman Show (Pokaz kobiety zmechanistotycznej) and Art Is a Result of Menstruation Envy (Sztuka jest skutkiem zazdrości o menstruację). The piece combines graffiti, installation art, sculpture and sound. It features Wspólnota Leeeżeć’s signature stencil images with repetitive, geometrical patterns, which could originate from an ancient civilisation or otherwise symbolise a future civilisation yet to come. Inspiration with Hinduism is also obvious. The artists form stone circles filled with brightly coloured pulverised pigments. This immediately brings to mind magic shamanic rituals, which might refer to the past or originate from the future. The artists use natural materials, but also spray paint and drills. The event unfolds to the soundtrack of trancey music, which enhances its magic appeal.

“The action was supposed to illustrate an exchange of sexual energy between the female and the male pole in an eternal dance of worlds divided into the sexes. It culminates when the lingam hammer batters the yoni cocoon leading to the release of energy latent therein” – artist Andrzej Miastkowski explains. Yoni is a Hindu term for female genitals, while linga is the symbol of Shiva. They represent female and male elements that complement one another and generate energy that creates the universe and ensures its lasting.
