  • Open Form: Oskar Hansen, Art, Architecture and Film

Sunday 25th May 2014 sees an event organised in cooperation with Filmoteka Muzeum at Tate Modern's Starr Auditorium in London.

Open Form is a concept formulated by Oskar Hansen (1922-2005), architect, artist and lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw affiliated with the Team 10, which
continues to influence artists who regard their practice as a form of social experimentation.

The point of departure for the screening is Hansen’s sculptural studio at the Academy and its students: Zofia Kulik, Przemysław Kwiek, Grzegorz Kowalski, Jan S. Wojciechowski, among many others, such as Elżbieta and Emil Cieślar, or Wiktor Gutt. These artists found creative ways to tap into their Hansen experience and develop their own unique artistic practices. One of them, Grzegorz Kowalski became professor of the academy and continues to run his own innovative studio, commonly known as “Kowalnia”.

Among other films, the screening features works by two of its graduates, Paweł Althamer and Artur Żmijewski, which respond to Hansen’s concept and develop it in various contexts. One of the emblematic artistic exercises practised in the studio, Common Space/Individual Space, is presented here as performed by the visual artist Anna Molska.

Artists: Paweł Althamer, Piotr Andrejew, Grupa KwieKulik, Paweł Kwiek, Anna Molska, Artur Żmijewski

Followed by discussion with Karol Sienkiewicz and David Crowley, chaired by Kasia Redzisz, Assistant Curator, Tate Modern.

The screening is part of the 12th KINOTEKA Polish Film Festival (24th April – 30th May) and presented in partnership with Filmoteka Muzeum of the Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw.

Curated by Łukasz Mojsak with George Clark, Assistant Curator, Film and Kasia Redzisz, Assistant Curator, Tate Modern.
