Exhibition and display design workshop

  • Display Tools

The Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw’s Faculty of Design, Austellungsdesign und Szenografie HfG Karlsruhe, the Centrala design group and Kooperative für Darstellungspolitik are happy to invite students of the Academy of Fine Arts’ Faculty of Design and Austellungsdesign und Szeno-grafie HfG Karlsruhe to an exhibition and display design workshop.

The workshop, intended for students of the Academy of Fine Arts’ Faculty of De-sign and Austellungsdesign und Szenografie HfG Karlsruhe and led by designers from the Centrala design group and Kooperative für Darstellungspolitik, will be de-voted to the issue of display tools. The phrase encompasses a wide array of tools: graphic design and methods of working with space, which enable exhibition de-signers to intensify the experience of presented objects. This doesn't only concern expositors - structures meant directly for the display of objects - but also any graphic or spatial arrangements that co-create the exhibition experience. We will look for such tools in the history of exhibition design, analyzing the work of crea-tors such as Stanisław Zamecznik, Oskar Hansen or Hannes Meyer. We will look into the tools they used (such as photo-mural, photographic frieze, spatial relief, visual essay, etalage, active/passive floor and many others) and analyze them by creating our own exhibition tools.

The workshop will be conducted in English.

The workshop is organized with the support of the Foundation for Polish-German Cooperation. We would like to thank the Academy of Fine Arts’ Faculty of Design for its help in organizing the event.

Group I: EXPOGRAPHY
A workshop on Expography, or exhibition design, will give the participants the chal-lenge testing exhibition models from the 1950s and 1960s - exhibition tools created by artists and architects such as Oskar Hansen, Erberto Carboni, Carlo Scarpa, Wojciech Zamecznik or Jacek Damięcki. They will analyze the meaning of viewer psychophysiology, the role of backgrounds and juxtapositions, the power of spatial reliefs, the meaning of active and passive floors, photo-murals, photographic friez-es and visual essays, as well as the sequence of objects in space and the choreo-graphic aspects of exhibitions.
led by: Małgorzata Kuciewicz, Simone De Iacobis (Centrala)

Group II: Museum display and shop window
The museum display and the shop window are exhibition tools that follow similar rules. Both are based on a particular relationship between the exposed object and the viewer. By defining distance and perspective, they suggest a specific way of seeing the object, while dismissing others, leading the viewers’ perception and suggesting certain interpretations of cultural and commercial artifacts. The work-shop will analyze strategies hidden behind exhibition tools and, while reaching into the history of shop window and museum display architecture, test the points of view associated with them and try to redefine them.

led by: Andreas Müller, Aaron Werbick (Kooperative für Darstellungspolitik)
