Even though Alina Szapocznikow always talked of herself as a sculptor (she wrote: „The roots of my artwork are in the craft of a sculptor"), drawing constitutes a significant part of her work. Szapocznikow’s drawings mostly center around anthropomorphic shapes full of allusions to the human figure, often her own body, which was a focal point of her creative activity.
The presented drawings are studies for the 1967 sculpture The Journey , which is in the collection of the Museum of Art in Łódź. The sculpture is made of tinted polyester and presents a naked female figure of supernatural height (235 cm), as if lifted by the speed of an invisible vehicle she is driving. In this slender white posture, red lips and nipples stand out as the emphasized attributes of femininity, as do the big sunglasses.
