“Becoming Brilliant” is an enigmatic portrait of a djinn, an Islamic folklore demon of pure flame in a cloud of steam, who (as legend has it) can be harnessed by enclosing it in an oil lamp or bottle. In Tala Madani’s paintings, the djinn falls victim to self-destruction, which paradoxically leads to enlightenment, literally and metaphorically.
