The Exodus of People from the Cities is one of Zbigniew Libera’s more recent works, however, and its form makes reference to panoramic battle paintings. The artist’s futuristic vision is based on the literary theme of dead metropoles: people leaving cities gone wild, with no electricity or running water, in search of a better place to live. The work refers back to Libera’s series Positives and Masters, which concentrated on analysing press photography and its ability to shape collective memory as well as the canon of art history.
