The series of photographs by Elżbieta Janicka and Wojciech Wilczyk “Another City” is one of the most important contemporary art projects concerning the history of Warsaw. The series is realised in a plain, documentary convention. The artists worked in colour, from autumn to spring, only on sunless days. This series is an attempt to visually capture the area of the former Warsaw Ghetto (1940-1943), between the Palace of Culture and Science in the south and the Arkadia shopping centre in the north. The artists photographed the site of the former ghetto from the roofs and high floors of buildings using a large-format 4 x 5 inch cut film camera. The pictures show the distinctive buildings of contemporary Warsaw: the Palace of Culture and Science, the Blue Skyscraper at plac Bankowy or the evangelical church at aleja Solidarności. The “Another City” project is an exploratory reflection on the city, its history, architectural and urban planning concepts of a monumental scale and extent, with the narrative focused on the history of an invisible city: the Jewish Warsaw.
