  • Marcin Maciejowski, Bust of a Woman (1944), 2014

The painting "Bust of a Woman (1944)" is based on an auto-referential play with the viewer, which is relatively new to Marcin Maciejowski. It depicts a viewer looking at the title painting by Picasso that hangs on the Museum’s wall and fixing it on her smartphone. The viewer in a way repeats the gesture of Maciejowski, who also appropriates Picasso’s painting for the purpose of his own performance. In this way the artist pays tribute to one of his favourite painters, simultaneously commenting on our contact with the reality through the media. He shows the contemporary experience of painting, filtrated both at the stage of creation and reception, through digital photography. Painting, which is already difficult to separate from our “banal” immersion in the visual internet communication based on image multiplication.
