The sculpture was created together with children and carers from the North Praga Pedagogy and Social Animation Group. For years, they knew and observed Mr. Rubber , a colourful figure from Brzeska Street—a petty criminal and drunkard to some, or an authority on the local code of honour to others. The sculpture is mounted on a spring and sways about when pushed by passing spectators, reminding them of the deceased and “animating” his figure. In 2009, the work stirred up controversy when it stood on Stalowa Street in the Praga district, as it allegedly emphasised the area’s bad reputation. However, it was also the object of lively interest, and was looked after by local residents (who gave Rubber a hat during the cold winter, for instance).
