Tala Madani (born 1981)

Painter Tala Madani (born 1981 in Teheran) has been a Los Angeles resident for years; yet in her work, she focuses on the representation of gender and sexuality in Iranian society, and on references to the traditions of Arab miniatures and Persian painting: “tea-house painting”. In her ironic works, Madani re-interprets patriarchal rituals and visual codes of machismo. Group prayer morhps into a homosexual orgy, birthday parties become targets for terrorist attacks; water pipe smoking climaxes in a dramatic explosion.
