Pedro Cabrita Reis (born 1956)

Pedro Cabrita Reis (born 1956 in Lisbon) is one of the most important Portuguese artists today. He uses drawing, painting, photography and sculpture, but also makes objects, installations and spatial arrangements. Reis uses readymade items such as light bulbs, windows, doors, mirrors, boards, bricks or steel girders, making his sculptures seem monumental. His works emphasise the impression of absence and the insignificance of human existence, but they also bring to sight what is supernatural in reality. Pedro Cabrita Reis represented Portugal at the Venice Biennial in 2003.
