Gülsün Karamustafa (born 1946)

Gülsün Karamustafa (born 1946 in Ankara) lives and works in Istanbul. She is one of the most important contemporary female artists in the Middle East, who has recently had numerous museum exhibitions and publications. Karamustafa is the author of paintings, objects, videos, films and installations. She frequently works with everyday use materials. In her artistic work, she picks up the notions of migration and its impact on the cultural identity of individuals, relations between the East and the West, parallels between history of the nation and individual biography as well as the problem of gender, including the impact of orientalist discourse on the ways of presentation of women.
