Gateway to Heaven shows Marcelo Zammenhoff climbing the metal stairs of a gigantic port conveyor structure. His actions is observed from multiple and frequently changing subjective perspectives. The soundtrack features a composition created by the artist on one of the first KORG digital synthesisers.
Left unfinished, the structure stood on an empty field in the Nowy Port area in Gdańsk, where Zammenhoff made a trip with friends from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk (among them members of the future CUKT collective). The artist says he had a sudden brainwave while climbing the stairs, when he came up with the idea to organise in that location the alternative culture event Industrial Megapicnic, which ultimately took place from 1991 to 1993. Zammenhoff was inspired by the bird’s eye view of the coastal bush thicket, artillery bunkers and the steel conveyor.
