Platonic Love Bill (1994) is a record of Roman Stańczak’s performance that confronted the status of an object with a fetishistic appeal, featuring used women’s tights gathered from waste bins around town. Stańczak continued to put on the tights layer after layer until the point when his limbs got stiff, a condition that could have ended fatally for the artist given the obstruction of blood circulation.

The tights are used here as a reference to assuming a new identity and to the intimacy of the private garment that carries different kinds of human stories. They also bring to mind women’s stories, which the artist engages with and later throws his new “skin” off like a snake during moulting. His simple act acquires a mystical dimension.
