Konrad Smoleński, associated with Poznań’s artistic circle known as Penerstwo, is no stranger to “pyromaniac” motifs in art. From 2007 to 2009, he destroyed the sign reading “THE END” a number of times by making it burn or explode, and his film Flowers (2009) depicts dangerous games with firecrackers. Here, a drum set is set on fire, and extinguished by a security staff member right the next moment. Featured in this context, the musical instrument bears an interesting reference to the close ties between Smoleński’s artistic practice and the sphere of music and sound.
