For Necessary Art is unique footage of the event Festiwal o sztukę potrzebną [Festival for Necessary Art], held at the Municipal Community Centre in Kłodzko in 1986. This formally austere documentation, shot with a VHS camera with no additional editing or cuts, captures the atmosphere of the communist period in Poland. Attires, hairstyles, interior decoration, even meals served on paper plates – all this guides the viewer through the artistic reality of that period. A reality that frames a kind of artistic orgy. Dionysian debauchery, booze-fuelled rock’n’roll singing, table-top dancing or fish thrown around the place – all are situated in the harsh aesthetic realm emblematic of communism. The cherry on top comes with the words of the caretaker of the venue, providing a punch line for the entire event: “Get the fuck out of here, please, all of you, you’re boring and wasted...”
