Zdzisław Jurkiewicz, who died in 2012, worked in the field of painting, drawing and photography. He also created installations and Conceptual projects. This episode of the Polish Film Chronicle presents the artist's works exhibited at the Mona Lisa Gallery in Wrocław in 1967. Jurkiewicz combined painting, sculpture and performative activity, exploring his interest in the role of spontaneous gesture and chance in creating the work of art. The essence of the works, whose titles indicated the date and time of creation, consisted in the artist's manipulations of solids covered with wet paint.

Jan Chwałczyk

The multidimensional artistic practice of Jan Chwałczyk embraced a variety of media – from painting and sculpture to Conceptual works and mail art. Chwałczyk also played a prominent role as an animator of artistic life in Poland. This episode of the Chronicle documents the artist's works from the 1960s, when Chwałczyk focussed primarily on the problematic of light and colour. The works – titled Reproductions – were shown at the exhibition Portraits and Self-portraits at the Mona Lisa Gallery in Wrocław in 1969. Chwałczyk tapped into the potential offered by the physical properties of light, the visual conditions of his compositions and the multiplicity of possible locations of the source of light.

Jerzy Rosołowicz

The questions of optics and light were important also for Jerzy Rosołowicz, whose work drew largely on the artist's theoretical reflection. In presented Spherical Reliefs, created since 1967, Rosołowicz used lens embedded in a wooden frame. The works thus acquired the character of instruments to modify the vision of the outside world.

Wanda Gołkowska

The avant-garde artistic practice of Wanda Gołkowska interlaced the elements of abstract art and Conceptualism. The episode of the Chronicle shows the artist working on one of her compositions that implemented her concept of “open set” – an open-ended work in which the presence of moving elements offered the possibility of modification. The footage also shows two ascetic abstract compositions by Gołkowska.
