Agnieszka Brzeżańska’s film Artemesia uses conventions common to erotic film to pry open the relationship between art, gender and desire. Set in a pseudo-historical period, the story concerns an amateur painter, who, despite a desire to study, is unable to do so because of the restrictions of the era in which she lives. To enter the art world the character has to become an object of masculine desire, undergoing an erotic ritual of initiation.
