Jill Godmilow (born 1943)

Jill Godmilow is an American independent film director. She was nominated for an Academy Award for “Antonia. A portrait of the woman” (1974), a documentary about the life of Antonia Brico – the first female conductor in history. She won the Sundance Film Festival with her feature film “Waiting for the moon” (1987), about the relationship of Gertude Stein and Alice B. Toklas. She is a prominent theorist of the non-fiction genre, a current Professor Emerita at the Department of Film, Television & Theatre at the University of Notre Dame. Her movie "Far from Poland", telling the history of Polish social movement "Solidarność", is one of the most innovative documentaries in the history of cinema. It combines para-documentary with sitcom, scientific commentary with melodrama, reeanacment with found footage.
