WWB TV. Monument to modernity Lecture by Robert Burghardt
The term ‘promising’ is more and more frequently applied to describe various projects for rehabilitation of historical buildings.
The rebuilding of the Berlin castle – Stadtschloss – is one of many examples of the global trend of such “traditionalism”. On the one hand, our environment is subjected to a continuous process of modernisation, on the other hand, the process is no longer supported by positive visions of the future.
The architect Robert Burghardt suggests a different approach and a new method of reconstruction. “Denkmal für die Moderne (Monument to Modernity)”, which is to be placed in the Berlin Castle Square, is a collage made up of pieces of various examples of modern architecture on a natural - 1:1 - scale. How important are these buildings today, the design of which incorporated the promise of a better life?
