Performance and the Social
Lecture by Shannon Jackson | Discussion

Building upon the arguments of her recent book, "Social Works", Shannon Jackson considers the opportunities and difficulties of reconciling various histories of experimental art practice, social theory, and political governance.

While 'performance' is a potential unifying category within this landscape, our conceptions of its social potential differ in particular art contexts and in relation to different political regimes. This lecture explores some key puzzles in the effort to join performance and social theory, using a variety of performance sites to think about relationality, antagonism, and public practice across art spheres.
