Art Brut Live. Lecture by Mario del Curto

Meeting with Mario del Curto, Swiss photographer and filmmaker, one of the world’s most outstanding documentarists who record the work of outsider-artists.

Mario del Curto has begun his artistic career with capturing street riots in 1970s and 1980s all around the world. In 1983, he got fascinated by artists who create at the margins of societies. Since then, the main current in his work have remained pictures documenting the life and the art of the outsiders – whom he calls ‘wayside creators’. Since 2006, with the director Bastien Genoux, he has been creating intimate film portraits of non-mainstream artists.

He is considered one of the most important photographers in the world of the outsider art. He collaborates with, among others, the ‘Raw Vision’ magazine and the Art Brut Collection in Lausanne of which he is a member of the Advisory Committee).

During the meeting, Mario del Curto will talk about his encounters and friendships with outsider artists, about what their art means to him; he will also present his awarded photographs and short documentary movies. He will also introduce his newest book, ‘Art Brut Live’.

For forty years, Mario del Curto has been performing concerned art photography. He lives and works in Lausanne, however, since picturing the world social movements in the 70s, his projects span across all five continents, especially when it comes to discovering outsider artists. He’s most recognised for his pictured of the Art brut creators and his stark documentation of performance art and theatre pieces. From 1981 to 2013 he was the official photographer for the Théâtre de Vidy in Lausanne. He also collaborates with other troupes and creators. His photographs have been numerously exhibited and published all around the world. Presently, del Curto is also involved in filmmaking and trans-diciplinary projects.
