VII Syncretic Show \"Taking the Hat off\", Osieki 1967 (1-3/3)

The event organized by Włodzimierz Borowski during the 1967 open air workshop in Osieki was his 7th Syncretic Show. Jerzy Ludwiński wrote the following about the show:

"Since 1963 the open air workshop in Osieki had become a meeting place for the most outstanding artists of the avant-garde, and in 1967 the gathering was particularly illustrious.

Tadeusz Kantor presented a "Panoramic Maritime Happening": a series of events, taking place at different levels and conceived on a great scale. Borowski's proposal on the following day could be viewed as a response, perhaps not necessarily to the previous happening but to all great happenings. He took out a summer house window and sunk it in the lake, decorated with coloured ribbons. In the evening a ceremony was held during which the window was solemnly raised from the deep; several workshop participants held lanterns over the water, lighting up the place where the sunken window lay. When it was lifted, it was covered not only with ribbons and strings but also hung with water weeds - a remarkable synthesis of nature and culture. Four men carried the window through the park, followed by the author and a procession of artists and workshop guests, and nailed it, still with its decoration, to a pole in front of the hotel. Then the window carriers broke its panes with crowbars and the author, who had so far been standing aside, took of his hat in his single gesture of the evening. This marked the end of the action named: "Zdjęcie kapelusza" (Taking off the Hat)."
