To see a society, to show a community
“Sociological photography” and Zofia Rydet’s "Record” - a lecture by Krzysztof Pijarski

  • To see a society, to show a community

The Museum of Modern Art presents another meeting in a series organized in conjunction with the Zofia Rydet photography exhibition.

“Photography and involvement”, “A short history of social photography”, “The mirror of social life”, “Photography and the sociologist's methods”, “The Polish road to documentary”, “Building a social space in photography” - those are examples of headlines for articles published in Polish photography magazines at the end of the 1970s and the beginning of the 1980s. If we add the symposium in Uniejów in 1977 on “The psycho-social aspects of photography” and the first national review of sociological photography in Bielsko-Biała, organized by Andrzej Batura in November 1980, it is hard not to think that we are dealing with a significant phenomenon that should also, or maybe especially, include Zofia Rydet's “Record”.

An attempt to answer the question: “What was sociological photography?” will help us look at the “Record” and see not only a unique, isolated phenomenon, but also the product of a very peculiar moment in history.

The lecture will be delivered by Krzysztof Pijarski - an artist who uses the photographic medium, adjunct professor at the Łódź Film School, art historian, translator. Editor of “Widok. Teorie i praktyki kultury wizualnej” magazine.
